Dreaming of an Australia East Coast campervan road trip? In September, Cat and Mike set off on a 3,000 km journey from Cairns to Sydney, exploring beaches, waterfalls, and rainforests along one of the world’s most iconic coastlines. Travelling in an Indie Campers Active Compact, they found the perfect balance between comfort and adventure.
“We’d always dreamed of driving Australia’s East Coast, from the wild rainforests up north to the laid-back surf towns down south. For three unforgettable weeks, that dream became reality behind the wheel of our Indie Campers van.”
This wasn’t just about ticking off places, it was about slowing down, reconnecting, and remembering what really matters. Their 3-week trip became a reflection on time, love, and the beauty of simply being on the way.
🎬 Watch their short film below, where they share their reflections on the road, milestones, and what it means to enjoy the journey rather than chase the destination.
Cape Tribulation & The Daintree: Where Two Worlds Meet
A few hours north of Cairns, the couple crossed the Daintree River Ferry and entered the oldest rainforest on Earth.
“No signal, just the sounds of the jungle , it felt like stepping into another world.”
They stayed near Cape Tribulation, the only place on the planet where the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef meet. Between rainforest walks, crocodile cruises, and local ice cream stops, they experienced the wild beauty that makes the Australia East Coast campervan road trip so unique.
Heading south, Cat and Mike found one of the trip’s hidden gems, Babinda Boulders, where they camped for free by the river. “The campsite was quiet, surrounded by rainforest. We swam in crystal-clear pools before breakfast, it was magic.”
Just 20 minutes away, Josephine Falls became their favorite stop: “The natural waterslide there was pure fun — we couldn’t stop laughing.”
Mission Beach & Toomulla: Where Time Slows Down
The couple followed the coastal road to Mission Beach, describing it as “a stretch of paradise that felt completely our own.” They spent sunsets watching the sky change color from their camper’s doorway.
Further south, they stopped at Toomulla, a free campsite near the beach. “We registered online and were rewarded with a beach full of tiny blue crabs, it looked like the sand was moving.”
Airlie Beach & The Whitsundays: Sailing into the Dream
For Cat and Mike, the highlight of the trip was sailing the Whitsundays. “We booked a 3-day trip and spent our days snorkeling coral reefs, swimming with turtles, and walking barefoot on Whitehaven Beach. It felt like living inside a postcard.”
They parked their Indie Campers van at Coral Sea Marina, which allowed overnight stays, “super convenient before and after the trip.”
Noosa & Byron Bay: Sunshine, Surf & Style
After long stretches of driving through Queensland, they reached Noosa, a coastal gem perfect for swimming, local markets, and a day trip to Australia Zoo.
Their final stop before Sydney was Byron Bay, where they reunited with friends. “Watching the sunset from Cape Byron Lighthouse was the perfect ending — surfers below, golden light, pure peace.”
Final Thoughts from the Road
“Three weeks flew by. We covered over 3,000 km, but it never felt like a rush. Every stop gave us something new, rainforests, beaches, reef, cities. Having our camper with us made it feel like home everywhere we went.”
Cat and Mike’s top tips for future travellers:
Drive during daylight — wildlife is more active at night.
Book campsites early, especially near popular spots like Noosa.
Take your time — Australia’s distances are vast, but so are its rewards.
